A Service of Prayer for the Beginning of Day (Wednesday, June 17, 2020)

Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name.

Bless the LORD, O my soul,
and do not forget all his benefit
— Psalm 103:1-2

Amidst all the trials, unrest and turbulence we face, we know we have a God of abundance. So, today we turn our minds toward gratitude and the blessings God has bestowed upon us.

Pause for a moment and think about all the wonderful things God has showered upon you. For example: I am thankful I can breathe. I have good water to drink. I have people who have called me to see if I am okay. I have the ability to get into touch with others. I am thankful for technology, no matter how infuriating it can be. I am thankful for all of you! This is only a very short list of blessings I have received, by the grace of God.

So what are you thankful for? Take a moment think about your blessingsWhen you have a chance, post them on the “GSLC Being the Church When we can’t be Together” Facebook page.

Today we focus on God’s abundance and blessings.

DIALOGUE

O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth shall declare your praise.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

Alleluia.

PSALMODY

Give glory to God, our light and our life.
Oh, come, let us worship him.
Oh, come, let us sing to the Lord; let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.
For the Lord is a great God and a great king above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth; the heights of the hills are also his.
The sea is his, for he made it; and his hands have molded the dry land.
Oh, come, let us bow down and bend the knee, and kneel before the Lord, our maker.
For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

Give glory to God, our light and our life.
Oh, come, let us worship him.

Psalm 104

Bless the LORD, O my soul.
     O LORD my God, you are very great.
You are clothed with honor and majesty,
     wrapped in light as with a garment.
You stretch out the heavens like a tent,
     you set the beams of your chambers on the waters,
you make the clouds your chariot,
     you ride on the wings of the wind,
you make the winds your messengers,
     fire and flame your ministers.

You set the earth on its foundations,
     so that it shall never be shaken.
You cover it with the deep as with a garment;
     the waters stood above the mountains.
At your rebuke they flee;
     at the sound of your thunder they take to flight.
They rose up to the mountains, ran down to the valleys
     to the place that you appointed for them.
You set a boundary that they may not pass,
     so that they might not again cover the earth.

You make springs gush forth in the valleys;
     they flow between the hills,
giving drink to every wild animal;
     the wild asses quench their thirst.
By the streams the birds of the air have their habitation;
     they sing among the branches.
From your lofty abode you water the mountains;
     the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.

You cause the grass to grow for the cattle,
     and plants for people to use,
to bring forth food from the earth,
     and wine to gladden the human heart,
oil to make the face shine,
     and bread to strengthen the human heart.
The trees of the LORD are watered abundantly,
     the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.
In them the birds build their nests;
     the stork has its home in the fir trees.
The high mountains are for the wild goats;
     the rocks are a refuge for the coneys.
You have made the moon to mark the seasons;
     the sun knows its time for setting.
You make darkness, and it is night,
     when all the animals of the forest come creeping out.
The young lions roar for their prey,
      seeking their food from God.
When the sun rises, they withdraw
     and lie down in their dens.
People go out to their work
     and to their labor until the evening.

O LORD, how manifold are your works!
     In wisdom you have made them all;
      the earth is full of your creatures.

Yonder is the sea, great and wide,
     creeping things innumerable are there,
     living things both small and great.

There go the ships,
     and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it.

These all look to you
     to give them their food in due season;
when you give to them, they gather it up;
     when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.
When you hide your face, they are dismayed;
     when you take away their breath, they die
     and return to their dust.

When you send forth your spirit, they are created;
     and you renew the face of the ground.

May the glory of the LORD endure forever;
     may the LORD rejoice in his works—
who looks on the earth and it trembles,
     who touches the mountains and they smoke.
I will sing to the LORD as long as I live;
     I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
May my meditation be pleasing to him,
     for I rejoice in the LORD.
Let sinners be consumed from the earth,
     and let the wicked be no more.
Bless the LORD, O my soul.
     Praise the LORD!

Your testimonies are very sure, and holiness befits your house, O Lord, forever and forevermore.

HYMN

Bless the Lord, O My Soul

Refrain:

     Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul
     Worship His Holy name
     Sing like never before, O my soul
     I'll worship Your Holy name

1.  The sun comes up
     It's a new day dawning
     It's time to sing Your song again
     Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me
     Let me be singing when the evening comes.       Refrain

2.  You’re rich in love and You're slow to anger
     Your name is great and Your heart is kind
     For all Your goodness I will keep on singing
     10,000 reasons for my heart to find.                      Refrain

3.  And on that day
     When my strength is failing
     The end draws near and my time has come
     Still my soul will sing Your praise unending
    10,000 years and then forevermore, forevermore.   Refrain 2 x

Ending:
     Yes, I will worship Your Holy name
     Lord, I'll worship Your Holy name

10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord o my soul ) - Matt Redman (with Lyrics)

READINGS

Isaiah 66:7-13

In this passage Jerusalem is portrayed as a bereaved woman and consoled. She will suddenly, without pain, bear children and become a bustling city, full of life. The Israelites, as Zion’s children, take consolation from the city’s breasts. But then the metaphor suddenly changes. God is portrayed as the nation’s mother. Here we see feminine images of God. Like a loving parent, God provides for His children. We are so blessed to such a compassionate God.

Before she was in labor
     she gave birth;
before her pain came upon her
     she delivered a son.
Who has heard of such a thing?
     Who has seen such things?
Shall a land be born in one day?
     Shall a nation be delivered in one moment?
Yet as soon as Zion was in labor
     she delivered her children.
Shall I open the womb and not deliver?
     says the LORD;
shall I, the one who delivers, shut the womb?
     says your God.

Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,
     all you who love her;
rejoice with her in joy,
     all you who mourn over her—
that you may nurse and be satisfied
     from her consoling breast;
that you may drink deeply with delight
     from her glorious bosom.

For thus says the LORD:
    I will extend prosperity to her like a river,
and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and you shall nurse and be carried on her arm,
     and dandled on her knees.
As a mother comforts her child,
     so I will comfort you;
     you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

Silence for meditation.

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets,
but in these last days God has spoken to us by the Son.

GOSPEL

Luke 12:22-31

These verses can have meaningful throughout my life. There are so many times I’ve wondered if we would financially make it through the month. But, what I’ve have learned over the years is God provides. If I have enough for today, I will be okay. So I encourage you today to remain faithful and to trust in God’s abundance. We are so blessed, for we have a God who is faithful may not give us everything we want, but will provide what we need.

[Jesus] said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life? If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! And do not keep striving for what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. For it is the nations of the world that strive after all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, strive for his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE

Refrain:
In the tender compassion of our God the Dawn from on high shall break upon us.

Blessed are you, Lord, the God of Israel,
you have come to your people and set them free.
You have raised up for us a mighty Savior,
born of the house of your servant David. Refrain

Through your holy prophets, you promised of old
to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us;
you promised to show mercy to our forebears
and to remember your holy covenant. Refrain

This was the oath you swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hands of our enemies,
free to worship you without fear,
holy and righteous before you, all the days of our life. Refrain

And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare the way,
to give God's people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of their sins. Refrain

In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us,
to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Refrain

1,  Go, my children, with my blessing, never alone.
     Waking, sleeping, I am with you, you are my own.
     In my love’s baptismal river,
     I have made you mine forever.
     Go, my children, with my blessing, you are my own.

2.  Go, my children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure.
     Here you learned how much I love you, what I can cure.
     Here you heard my dear Son’s story,
     here you touched him, saw his glory.
     Go, my children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure.

3.  Go, my children, fed and nourished, closer to me.
     Grow in love and love by serving, joyful and free.
     Here my Spirit’s power filled you,
     here my tender comfort stilled you.
     Go, my children, fed and nourished, joyful and free.

4.  I, the Lord, will bless and keep you, and give you peace.
     I, the Lord, will smile upon you, and give you peace.
     I, the Lord, will be your Father,
     Savior, Comforter, and Brother.
     Go, my children, I will keep you, and give you peace.
