Second Sunday in Lent

Please Note: Today we will celebrate Holy Communion. You will want to have available some wine or juice and a piece of bread.

PRELUDE

GATHERING

INTRODUCTION TO THE DAY

This week the second attribute of Lent—sacrifice—will be highlighted in the dialogue. There are many in the Scripture who made sacrifices for God and his purposes. Two women—Hannah and Mary, the mother of Christ—are today’s examples of sacrifice—each in her own way. The setting is a garden.

GATHERING HYMN
Awake My Soul and with the Sun (LBW 269)
Vocals: Chris and Christopher Simcox, Accompaniment: Chris Simcox

 1.   Awake, my soul, and with the sun
      thy daily stage of duty run;
      shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise
      to pay thy morning sacrifice.

2.  All praise to thee, who safe hast kept
      and hast refreshed me while I slept.
      Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,
      I may of endless light partake.

3.   Lord, I my vows to thee renew.
      Disperse my sins as morning dew;
      guard my first springs of thought and will;
      and with thyself my spirit fill.

4.  Direct, control, suggest, this day,
      all I design or do or say,
      that all my pow'rs, with all their might,
      in thy sole glory may unite.

5.  Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
      praise God, all creatures here below;
      praise God above, ye heav'nly host;
      praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God,
the keeper of the covenant,
the source of steadfast love,
our rock and our redeemer.
Amen.

God hears us when we cry, and draws us close in Jesus Christ. Let us return to the one who is full of compassion.

Silence is kept for reflection.

Fountain of living water,
pour out your mercy over us.
Our sin is heavy, and we long to be free.
Rebuild what we have ruined
and mend what we have torn.
Wash us in your cleansing flood.
Make us alive in the Spirit
to follow in the way of Jesus,
as healers and restorers of the world you so love.
Amen.

Beloved, God’s word never fails.
The promise rests on grace:
by the saving love of Jesus Christ,
the wisdom and power of God,
your sins are ☩ forgiven, and God remembers them no more.
Journey in the way of Jesus.
Amen.

GREETING

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God,
And the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

O God, by the passion of your blessed Son you made an instrument of shameful death to be for us the means of life. Grant us so to glory in the cross of Christ that we may gladly suffer shame and loss for the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

The congregation is seated.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

WORD

THE FIRST READING
1 Samuel 1:3-20

A reading from 1 Samuel.
Now this [Elkanah] used to go up year by year from his town to worship and to sacrifice to the LORD of hosts at Shiloh, where the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were priests of the LORD. On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?”

After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the LORD. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: “O LORD of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.”

As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, “How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.” But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.” Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.”  And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer.

 They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the LORD remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him of the LORD.”

The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

PSALMODY
 Psalm 51:15-19
(Read responsively.)

O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
            For you have no delight in sacrifice;
            if I were to give a burnt offering, you would not be pleased.
The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit;
            a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Do good to Zion in your good pleasure;
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem,
            then you will delight in right sacrifices,
            in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings;
            then bulls will be offered on your altar.

The congregation stands.

GOSPEL
Luke 2:41-51

 The holy gospel according to Luke.
Glory to you, O Lord.

Now every year [Jesus’] parents went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when he was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it.  Assuming that he was in the group of travelers, they went a day’s journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said to him, “Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety.” He said to them, “Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand what he said to them. Then he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart.

The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY
God Loved the World (ELW 323)
Vocals: Chris and Christopher Simcox, Accompaniment: Chris Simcox

1.  God loved the world so that he gave
his only Son the lost to save,
that all who would in him believe
should everlasting life receive.

2.   Christ Jesus is the ground of faith,
who was made flesh and suffered death;
all who confide in Christ alone
are built on this chief cornerstone.

3.   If you are ill, if death draws near,
this truth your troubled heart can cheer:
Christ Jesus rescues us from death;
that is the firmest ground of faith.

4.   Be of good cheer, for God's own Son
forgives all sins that you have done,
and justified by Jesus' blood,
your baptism grants the highest good.

5.   All glory to the Father, Son,
and Holy Spirit, Three in One!
To you, O blessed Trinity,
be praise now and eternally!

HOLY COMMUNION

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you.
And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

PREFACE

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,
that we should at all times and in all places
give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God,
through our Savior Jesus Christ.
You call your people to cleanse their hearts
and prepare with joy for the paschal feast,
that, renewed in the gift of baptism,
we may come to the fullness of your grace.
And so, with all the choirs of angels,
with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven,
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might:
Heaven and earth are full of our glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE

Blessed are you, O God of the universe.
Your mercy is everlasting
and your faithfulness endures from age to age.
Praise to you for creating the heavens and the earth.
Praise to you for saving the earth from the waters of the flood.
Praise to you for bringing the Israelites safely through the sea.
Praise to you for leading your people through the wilderness
to the land of milk and honey.
Praise to you for the words and deeds of Jesus, your anointed one.
Praise to you for the death and resurrection of Christ.
Praise to you for your Spirit poured out on all nations.

In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

With this bread and cup
we remember our Lord’s passover from death to life
as we proclaim the mystery of faith:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

O God of resurrection and new life:
Pour out your Holy Spirit on us
and on these gifts of bread and wine.
Bless this feast.
Grace our table with your presence.
Come, Holy Spirit.

Reveal yourself to us in the breaking of the bread.
Raise us up as the body of Christ for the world.
Breathe new life into us.
Send us forth,
burning with justice, peace, and love.
Come, Holy Spirit.

With all your holy ones of all times and places,
with the earth and all its creatures,
with sun and moon and stars,
we praise you, O God,
blessed and holy Trinity,
now and forever.
Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven,
            hallowed be thy name,
            thy kingdom come,
            thy will be done,
                        on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
            and forgive us our trespasses,
                        as we forgive those
                        who trespass against us;
            and lead us not into temptation,
                        but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
            and the power, and the glory,
            forever and ever.
Amen.

SENDING HYMN
Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus (verses 1-2, 4), (LBW 487)
Vocals and Accompaniment: Chris Simcox

1.   Let us ever walk with Jesus,
      follow his example pure,
      through a world that would deceive us
      and to sin our spirits lure.
      Onward in his footsteps treading,
      pilgrims here, our home above,
      full of faith and hope and love,
      let us do our Father’s bidding.
      Faithful Lord, with me abide;
      I shall follow where you guide.

2.   Let us suffer here with Jesus,
      and with patience bear our cross.
      Joy will follow all our sadness;
      where he is there is no loss.
      Though today we sow no laughter,
      we shall reap celestial joy:
      all discomforts that annoy
      shall give way to mirth hereafter.
      Jesus, here I share your woe;
      help me there your joy to know.

4.   Let us also live with Jesus.
      He has risen from the dead
      that to life we may awaken.
      Jesus, since you are our head,
      we are your own living members;
      where you live, there we shall be
      in your presence constantly,
      living there with you forever.
      Jesus, if I faithful be,
      life eternal grant to me.
